Building the Nazi Party / 1924 – 1933
The failure of the Beer-Hall putsch and his period of imprisonment transformed Hitler from an incompetent adventurer into a shrewd political tactician, who henceforth decided that he would never again confront the gun barrels of army and police until they were under his command. He concluded that the road to power lay not through force alone but through legal subversion of the Weimar Constitution, the building of a mass movement and the combination of parliamentary strength with extra-parliamentary street terror and intimidation. Helped by Goering and Goebbels he began to reassemble his followers and rebuild the movement which had disintegrated in his absence.
In January 1925 the ban on the Nazi Party was removed and Hitler regained permission to speak in public. Outmanoeuvring the ’socialist’ North German wing of the Party under Gregor Strasser, Hitler re-established himself in 1926 as the ultimate arbiter to whom all factions appealed in an ideologically and socially heterogeneous movement. Avoiding rigid, programmatic definitions of National Socialism which would have undermined the charismatic nature of his legitimacy and his claim to absolute leadership, Hitler succeeded in extending his appeal beyond Bavaria and attracting both Right and Left to his movement. Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria, on 20 April 1889. The son of a fifty-two-year-old Austrian customs official, Alois Schickelgruber Hitler, and his third wife, a young peasant girl, Klara Poelzl, both from the backwoods of lower Austria, the young Hitler was a resentful, discontented child. Moody, lazy, of unstable temperament, he was deeply hostile towards his strict, authoritarian father and strongly attached to his indulgent, hard-working mother, whose death from cancer in December 1908 was a shattering blow to the adolescent Hitler..
BONO : real frontman
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Paul “Bono” Hewson is the second child of Bobby and Iris Hewson. His brother, Norman, is the oldest.
Described by Bobby as “a bloody exasperating child”, Paul got a reputation at an early age for being both absent-minded yet argumentative…traits which earned him the unholy and ironic nickname “the Antichrist” from both family and friends.
At the same time, he was starry-eyed and wickedly curious…the kind of youngster who viewed the world through rose-colored glasses, while at the same time questioning what he saw.
The most notable example of this was witnessed by both Bobby and Iris Hewson when Paul was three-years-old, playing in their backyard garden: the couple watched with both horror and fascination as their toddler lifted honeybees off the flowers on his fingertip, talked to them, then put them back on the petals without ever getting stung. Dave ‘The Edge’ Evans was born in Barking, Essex, in East London, to parents of Welsh descent, Gwenda and Garvin Evans. When he was a year old, the family – which included younger sister Gillian (Gill) and older brother Richard (Dick) – moved to Dublin, where he has lived ever since. There, he grew up as a quiet yet very intelligent kid. He did well in school – first at St. Andrew’s Primary School and then at Mount Temple – and until he met the boys who would be his future bandmates, he wanted to go to university and become a doctor or an engineer.
In the fall of 1976 he spotted Larry’s note on the Mount Temple Comprehensive High School bulletin board asking for anyone interested in forming a band. He was the first to respond, and he went to the first meeting in Larry’s house with his brother Dick. ADAM CLAYTON : real bad boy of U2
“Flashback: Dublin Christmas ‘78 and you’re at this party thrown by Charles O’Connor, the guitarist in Horslips. A young chap comes up to you, thrusting the demo tape by his group into your hands. Another bloody demo tape. And then this guy, glasses, permed frizzy blond hair like a bleached Jimi Hendrix, he starts pumping you, asking you all these questions about the music business. Really good incise precise questions. This guy is brimming intent. In rock’n'roll, attitude is as important as musical skill, the sense of going for it.”
Having been eased out of high school earlier in the year, Adam Clayton found himself free to spend the following months acting as manager for the fledgling U2, for whom he also served as bassist. Music had been a passion for Adam since discovering rock’n'roll in the mid-seventies, and he was whole-heartedly and optimistically committed to his band and his vision, an “undeniable belief” as The Edge later remembered. Although Paul McGuinness had assumed official managerial duties back in May, here was Adam hawking U2’s second demo tape to anyone who would listen. LARRY MULLEN jr. :real founder of U2
Larry Mullen Jr.
Lawrence Joseph Mullen was born and raised in Artane, located the north side of Dublin, at 60 Rosemount Avenue. He had to add the “Junior” to the end of his name to distinguish himself from his father, Larry Mullen, Sr. As Larry’s career blossomed, so did his tax bills and his father was the unlucky recipient of them in the early 1980s. Before U2, Larry’s previous gigs included playing drums for the Post Office Workers Union Band, and, for three weeks, the Artane Boys Band. Some of his earliest gigs included the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on O’Connell Street, the bandstand on St. Stephen’s Green, and the pier in Dun Laoghaire.
Larry’s music career started when he began taking piano lessons when he was 8 years old. He did not fancy the notion of studying the piano scales or learning music theory, so he gave up the piano and began drumming in 1971. He started taking classes with Ireland’s best-known drummer, Joe Bonnie. When Bonnie died a year later, his daughter Monica continued teaching Larry. However, Larry has said that his drumming style is “unteachable” and that spirit and instinct are what guides his technique. He has said that he just wanted to “physically hit the thing,” in regard to the drums, so lessons where he couldn’t just play were not his cup of tea, so to speak. TIESTO : king of trance
Highly regarded by both DJ Magazine and ultra-loyal fans, DJ Tiësto, due in part to his legendary six-hour, energetic live sets, has been elevated to mythical status as one of the world’s foremost trance DJs. A native of Breda, Netherlands (born Tijs Verwest on January 17, 1969), Tiësto first starting playing out at a well-known club in his hometown called the Sprock. Discovered there by the GM of Rotterdam-based Basic Beat Recordings, Tiësto released his first of five mix CDs as a part of the label’s Forbidden Paradise series.
Coupled by quick success and his accelerated work ethic, Tiësto soon partnered with Arny Bink and, in late 1997, started Black Hole Recordings as a private label for his productions and mixes which became the birthplace for both his Space Age and revered Magik series (volume seven hit during the summer of 2001). In addition to these acclaimed series, Black Hole also brought the world the first mix compilations from artists such as Ferry Corsten, Johan Gielen, and Armin Van Buuren, and introduced yet another prized series called In Trance We Trust.
