John Paul Jones is regarded as The Father of the American Navy, and rightly so given his heroic courage in battle and his devotion to America’s struggle for independence. Yet sadly, Jones alienated himself from the country he loved, dying penniless and alone in France at the age of 45. Why did the war hero’s story end so dismally? The answer is simple: John Paul Jones never valued relationships.
Talent and Temper
John Paul Jones was born in Scotland under the given name of John Paul. He achieved notoriety as a 21-year old sailor when he safely piloted a ship back to port after its captain and first mate had succumbed to yellow fever. The feat won him the respect of the ship’s owners, who made him the vessel’s captain and gave him a commission on its profits.
John Paul’s success in Scotland was short-lived, though. Soon after being named as captain, he became enraged with a sailor and demanded that the man be whipped. The flogging ordered by John Paul was so severe that the man later died from his wounds. Although he avoided criminal charges and kept his command, John Paul’s reputation never recovered, nor did he learn his lesson.
A few years later, John Paul slaughtered a mutinous shipmate after a dispute over wages. Rather than stand trail for his actions, he fled to America, changing his name to John Paul Jones. It’s highly usable with just the right amount of controls for basic mixing and scratching. For being mostly plastic, the device feels well built – with the knobs and buttons twisting/clicking solidly. The crossfader has a metal stem with a removable cap and cuts smoothly.
The jogs are awesomely functional. They are touch sensitive (i can hold the unit upside down and activate the platters). They are also as smooth as butter, and amazingly sensitive when it comes to their scratch performance.
The current packed-in software (Mixvibes Cross LE) is great for beginners/intermediate djs, even some pros might prefer it. But the great thing about the Discover DJ is that it’s also a MIDI device that can be used with any dj software that supports a midi controller (NI Traktor, Virtual DJ, Mixxx, DJay, and others), with a bit of mapping. Building the Nazi Party / 1924 – 1933
The failure of the Beer-Hall putsch and his period of imprisonment transformed Hitler from an incompetent adventurer into a shrewd political tactician, who henceforth decided that he would never again confront the gun barrels of army and police until they were under his command. He concluded that the road to power lay not through force alone but through legal subversion of the Weimar Constitution, the building of a mass movement and the combination of parliamentary strength with extra-parliamentary street terror and intimidation. Helped by Goering and Goebbels he began to reassemble his followers and rebuild the movement which had disintegrated in his absence.
In January 1925 the ban on the Nazi Party was removed and Hitler regained permission to speak in public. Outmanoeuvring the ’socialist’ North German wing of the Party under Gregor Strasser, Hitler re-established himself in 1926 as the ultimate arbiter to whom all factions appealed in an ideologically and socially heterogeneous movement. Avoiding rigid, programmatic definitions of National Socialism which would have undermined the charismatic nature of his legitimacy and his claim to absolute leadership, Hitler succeeded in extending his appeal beyond Bavaria and attracting both Right and Left to his movement.
